Needs

Wester-Amstel is a historic country estate in the shadow of Amsterdam. Park and gardens are accessible to the public, and soon the former stables will once again be used for public events. For this purpose the entrance, the former coach house, is currently being rebuilt. Immediately behind the existing stable doors, a glass porch is being installed. On it, we would like to place a life-size image of the rear of a so-called "summer brig". This is the last coach that stood in this space until approximately 1910.

The assignment is to make an image of the back of the summer brig. The starting point for this is the image and exact measurements of an original summer coach, from the collection of National Carriage Museum Nienoord in Leek, Groningen. High resolution photographs of this rear side are available.

The atmosphere of the space is a combination of historical elements dating from the 17th and 18th centuries (clinker floor, wooden parts) and modern (glass, straight staircase, open beams). The design should reflect this. We don't like a one-to-one realistic image of the photograph. A certain degree of abstraction is.

For the application of the image on the glass doors, several techniques are possible: sandblasting (preferred), screen printing and photo-printing. Etching is not an option. The design should be monochrome, and 'monumental', it is expected to define the image of this entrance and entry for the next 50 years. The dimensions of the final sculpture are: height 235 centimeters, wheel height 108cm, distance between wheels 144 cm. The ceiling height of the porch is 301 centimeters (290 to beam) and width is 250 centimeters, distance from outside door to glass door is approximately 250 centimeters. Further dimensions are included in detail drawings.
